Anchor Katy Clark tells us about two new CD’s of calypso music. One is from Toronto-based band Kobo Town. The band gets its name — and musical inspiration — from a neighborhood in Port of Spain, Trinidad, known as the birthplace of calypso. The other CD is from calypso musician Lord Relator.

Ha ha ha! I laughed so much. My mother is from Trinidad and Tobago and my grandmother still used many Trinidadian colloquiollisms to the day she left us. I heard some of my Grandmother’s language–as in Lord Relator’s style, the double negatives sort of essential to that island sound…, or as in “they does raise the price…” .
I enjoyed hearing Kobo Town’s riffs and they reminded me the popular rap/ pop music I listen to today, and I can’t believe the similarities…perhaps some of the origins or rap? thanks for the piece. Good memories. thanks for that.
