Rewind nearly 600 years for today’s Geo Quiz. Our quiz takes us to the scene of a turning point in the Hundred Years’ War between the English and the French. The year was 1415.
The English army found itself cornered by a much larger French force in the place we’re looking for. But the English managed to defeat the French… thanks in part to a new kind of weapon.
“The English longbow probably about 6 feet long, pulled back with the string to the ear, arrow about 30 inches long, then shot out of this at tremendous speed and it could pierce armor, so masses thousands of archers using these against the advancing French very effectively indeed.”
We’ll tell you more about those archers in a little bit. First you’ve got to name the place where this famous battle took place…
We’re looking for the battleground of a decisive English victory over the French in the Hundred Years’ War. Historians today have a better understanding of the men who fought that battle.
That’s because the service records of 250,000 medieval soldiers are now on line. They include some who fought at the Battle of Agincourt in northern France.
That’s the answer to today’s Quiz. Anne Curry is a professor of Medieval History at the University of Southampton in England. She’s one of two scholars who put all this detailed information on-line. Here’s a link to the site.
