It’s time to get your prescription filled: we’re looking for a city in western Canada where a one-of-a-kind pharmacy opened its doors this week.

It’s a pharmacy that serves only women. Listen to the interview below to find out why a local women’s health group thought a women-only pharmacy was needed.

But first name the city that is at the center of Western Canada’s biggest metropolitan area. It’s sandy beaches and stunning mountains make it a big draw for tourists. There’lll be a lot of them coming next year, when the Winter Olympics are held there.

…. and the city we’re talking about is Vancouver, British Columbia.

Lu’s Pharmacy is the name of the place, the media in Canada has dubbed it North America’s first pharmacy just for women. And its operated by the Vancouver Women’s Health Collective. Lisa Mullins talked with Caryn Duncan, the group’s executive director.

A “women’s only” pharmacy is fine by me. Anyone willing to put their money at risk should be allowed to decide exactly what their business model will be. I wish them and their customers the best.

I do find it very telling however that, when Ms. Duncan was asked about a “men’s only” pharmacy, she conveniently did not answer the question as it was put to her. I will assume that she did not answer because she is an honest person and did not want to tell a lie.

Thanks for the interesting stories, keep them coming.

I am totally outraged at the attitude of this woman agains men. As if all the drug addicts and dangerous humans around the pharmacy’s area are men. May I remind her that there’s just as many drug addicted women and abusive women in every area in the world. She reminds me of a few gay women that just hate men period and don’t wnat them around and wish they would just dissappear.
Thank you Ms. Mullins for presenting her with the scenario that if these were men building a pharmacy for just men she would be right there protesting along with all the other women involded with this women project. This is not acceptable. Thank you very much

Thank You Ms. Mullins for asking the question that came to my mind as I was listening. The exclusion of men from this safe and clean pharmacy. Creating a safe place to purchase drugs in a sketchy part of Vancouver is truly admirable, making it exculsionary according to sex is not. Are there public funds provided for this pharmacy?, and why in a country that has a national health care program the standards have dropped to the point that these actions were taken in the first place?
This attitude that a certain percentage of the female population has is understandable, but it is not effective. My wife and I are in these times very progressive. In the Eighties, my wife was a member of NOW, and I supported her as well as all forms of equality as guaranteed under The Bill of Rights, but when NOW calls, our home for our support, they refuse to talk to me, as if I am the enemy, which irritates my wife as well as myself!
