The economy isn’t the only factor that contributes to quality of life. That’s why the United Nations compiles a Human Development Index, or HDI.

So for today’s Geo Quiz… We’re asking about HDI instead of GDP. The Index tries to rank well-being by looking at things like life expectancy, education and standard of living. We want to know the country that ranked number one on the HDI in 2008.

It’s a northern island nation with a small population — only about 320,000 live there. Its landscape has been shaped by volcanic activity. And it’s not always as cold as its name suggests.

Got it yet?

Well, here’s one more clue.

This country was hit hard by the global credit crunch last Fall when its main commercial banks collapsed…

For today’s Geo Quiz we’re looking at the UN’s Human Development Index. That’s a ranking that goes beyond purely financial factors to measure well-being around the world.

Last year, Iceland topped the list. And Iceland is the answer to our quiz. It’s not clear if the country will keep its title, though. It suffered an economic collapse last October.

But now, a little more than nine months after the crisis – or “kreppa” in Icelandic — the financial meltdown is bringing an unexpected return….. in the form of a baby boom.
