nagasakiStudents at the University of Nagasaki are attempting to recreate a community that a nuclear weapon destroyed. The Urakami neighborhood in Nagasaki was ground zero for the second atomic bomb the U-S dropped on Japan in World War Two. That attack killed 39-thousand people. And it destroyed most pictures of life in Urakami before the war. The students are recreating pre-war Urakami, with the help of memories and 3D technology. Akiko Fujita has our radio story.

What a wonderful project! I think to make it an even more in-depth picture of the city before it’s destruction, the creators should take survivor stories (such as the one about the barbershop where everyone crammed into the doorway to hear the interviewee’s sister sing), and the other different buildings and homes portrayed in the layout, and add the stories in pop-up boxes, next to the buildings.

    Just a thought… :)

The first time I visited Japan was in 1988. I went to both the Nagasaki and Hiroshima Peace Museums during that trip. All I can say is that the impact of what I saw will last my lifetime. My Father’s aunt lived in the mountains above Hiroshima and saw the survivors walking past her home looking for shelter among the trees. What these wonderful students are doing is priceless and I cheer them on! Maybe they will inspire others to do the same for Hiroshima. In either case, I am thankful for what they are doing for Nagasaki and for the rest of humanity. Cheers!!!
