British commandos have freed New York Times reporter Stephen Farrell (pictured) in a raid on a Taliban hide-out in northern Afghanistan. The journalist’s Afghan translator Sultan Munadi and one of the British soldiers were killed during the operation, officials said. The New York Times reported that Farrell, who holds British and Irish nationality, was “extracted” by “a lot of soldiers.” He had been taken hostage Saturday along with his translator in the northern province of Kunduz when both men went to cover a German-ordered airstrike of two hijacked fuel tankers. Marco Werman talked with Pamela Constable, the Kabul correspondent for the Washington Post.
