Senegalese musician Baaba Maal swings in and out of tradition.

He began his career rocking out his country’s roots music.

Since then, he’s pushed the boundaries of those roots with the likes of Peter Gabriel and Sinead O’Connor…but on the next release, he’ll come back to Senegal.

Well for his latest recording, he goes out again, this time teaming up with the Brooklyn party band, Brazilian Girls.

This may sound like Baaba Maal has finally gone too far out there.

But it’s certainly won over critic Tom Schnabel.

Tom Schnabel has the most impeccable taste and insightful observations on the World [of] Music.

I lived in Los Angeles for twenty years and during that time, he was responsible for exposing me to more great music than any other person on the planet. He should be declared a national music treasure.

Please, more of him on your show!

Thanks Tom. And also thanks to Marco for a terrific segment of The World in the same tradition.
