President Barack Obama has shelved the Bush adminstration’s plan for an Eastern European missile defense system. The President said a redesigned defensive system would be cheaper, quicker and more effective against the threat from Iranian missiles. In 2008 President George W Bush signed deals to base interceptor missiles and radars in Poland and the Czech Republic respectively to counter what Washington described as threats from rogue states such as Iran. But a furious Russia threatened military retaliation. Jason Margolis reports
