* Jiri Stivin. I discovered him when I was in Prague. He plays flute
and recorder and maybe some other instruments. He plays jazz and music
of the Renaissance and he’s wonderful at all of it. I found his CDs at
the shop at the Agharta Jazz Club in Prague, but I’m sure they can be
found other places, too.

* Hadouk Trio. A French guy plays several different wind instruments.
An American plays percussion. A guy that I think might be from South
Africa plays keyboards and some African instruments. I’ve got a couple
of their CDs that I’ve acquired on different trips, and both are
wonderful. I discovered them by listening on the headphones at FNAC
(French store that sells music & electronics & stuff).

I love Takagi Matakatsu and have a lot of his songs on my ipod, two of my favorites are “Ophelia” and “Rama”. In addition, I have Cornelius (“Drop”),Hasymo’s version of the Beatles’”Everybody Had a Hard Year”, and Organic Stereo’s “Child’s View” from their album The Stories Linger in my Mind”. We were in France this summer and came away with a much-loved CD (Vie de Grenier) purchased from a group of street musicians: FATRAS. An audacious group of young men with horns, drums, accordian, guitar, and a bullhorn. Their songs are cynical, political, beautiful, laugh out loud good fun. Well an I-Pod is a luxury item that this fiscally poor college senior cannot afford; however, when I have time and access to the internet I have been playing “Empire State” by Jay-Z back- to back -to back for the past 3 weeks.

I know some NPR / The World listeners are likely skeptical of the rap genre of music, but I urge you to have a listen**… It is a fantastic tune. Alicia Keys sings the refrain and “ogh” it is beautiful.

**The “s-word” is stated once in “Empire State”. Besides that the song is profanity free.

I’m actually sending this on behalf of my 4-year-old daughter, Esther, and my 3-year-old son, Yan. There are several artists that I like that they can’t stop asking to hear again and again (and believe it or not, in spite of their persistent interest, I still like the music).

1. The first is Norwegian “alternative electronic pop” artist Cuckoo. My kids’ favourite song of his is definitely “Ringalingading”. Cuckoo’s website has the music on it:

2. The second is Davvisámi (North Saami) artist Mari Boine. My kids absolutely love to listen to her music on YouTube, which I let them explore with supervision. Their favourite two tracks are (for Esther) “Gula, Gula Chilluminati” () and (for Yan) “Boađán nuppi bealde” ().

3. They also enjoy music of Supermonkey (such as “Tonight”) and Gjerstad Funk- og Fiskarlag (such as “Donde està la pistola de mi abuela”).

What a cool idea from an already cool show! With the notable exception of Radiohead, most of my favorite music is not in English. Lately I’ve been especially captivated by African music and nuevo flamenco. Among the regulars on my iPod are Richard Bona (Cameroon), Sara Tavares (Cape Verde), Concha Buika (Spain), Ketama (Spain), Chambao (Spain), Papa Wemba (DR Congo), Africando All Stars (various), and MC Solaar (Senegal/France).

This year’s albums that I just can’t erase from my audio player are:
- KAL “Radio Romanista”, Serbian Roma musicians that are very funky and modernize the “gypsy music” genre
- Besh o droM [sic], various albums, a band from Hungary with strong Roma influences, integrating a lot of other genres
- DVA “Fonok”, very quirky, funny, and, above all, groovy band from the Czech Republic. Every song is interesting, to say the least.
- Lura
- Chiwoniso
- Novalima

This year has been a great one so far for world music lovers, and thanks to The World, I’ve discovered a few new artists. Fantastic show!

Almost anything and everything Broadway, Abba, some modern stuff like from CD’s like Now and some of the stuff you hear on the radio but then others like Olivia Newton John or My Chemical Romance. I listen to practically anything.

I see a lot of Hindi movies, so there’s a lot of Indian music on my iPod, and all of the “most-played 25″ on my iTunes are Hindi. Faves this year are the songs from “Delhi 6″ by A.R. Rahman (this is one of his best efforts, much better than “Slumdog”) and also from Kaminey, music director (and director and singer) “Vishal Bhardwaj”. Both albums are chock-full of great stuff.

Other than Hindi stuff I listen to a lot of Lila Downs, Divine Comedy, Rufus Wainwright, Sanseverino, Audra McDonald. All of them have many fantastic albums, top to bottom.

Hundreds of classical and opera CDs but only a few of them have migrated to my iPod. Tend to prefer those things live.

Past year discovered morlum/Luk thung (NE Thailand, Laos) by such artists as Phornsiri and Raggen. Great stuff

Piazzolla tangos and Salif Keita; and a current fascination is the Acadian rap group Radio Radio – who lyricize in Franglais, or more properly Chiac which is Acadian French seamlessly merged with English. Linguistically and culturally (I am not Acadian) it is amazing how the music shows the perseverence, re-invention, and fluorishing of Acadian culture in New Brunswick, Canada after the diaspora and return..

Regardless of how full my player gets, Pink Floyd’s (Syd Barrett era) Piper At The Gates of Dawn is always there.

The rest is a random mix of various Vocaloids songs (a Japanese voice synthesizing program that people have done amazing things with, check it out!), Nine Inch Nails and Bob Dylan. My mp3 player only holds about one hundred songs, so they change every few weeks.

Last week all I listened to was Richard Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde. Or Tristan und Isolde, really. Good stuff ;)

Listening to “40 Day Dream” and “Home” by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros – reconditioned hippie tunes from a 10 member band!

Rolling through Tim Barry’s folk stylings on “28th & Stonewall”. This is the 3rd full-length album former front man of the punk/hardcore band Avail. The main stream media has ignored the folk music revival for the past 3-4 years from the post-hardcore/punk musicians. In the same vein, also listening to Austin Lucas’ “Somebody Loves You” and Chris Wollard & The Ship Thieves’ “In The Middle of the Sea”, and Joey Cape’s “Going for the Bronze”.
