For most Americans, Bulgarian folk singing means one thing — and one group: Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares. The world-famous choir features about 20 women, singing intricate arrangements of traditional folk melodies. Well, in Brooklyn, New York, The World’s Alex Gallafent met a different choir doing it their way. (Photos: Alex Gallafent)

  6. I didn’t hear the into to Black Sea Hotel, so when I heard the music I thought you were featuring Mila Vocal Ensemble from Minnesota (my home state). I’ve loved Mila for years so it was fun to hear about another group doing Balkan a cappella music!

  10. I love the music! Does anyone know where to find a copy of the lyrics and especially a translation? Just the sound of their voices is fantastic, but I imagine that understanding the lyrics would make the experience even better. I haven’t seen lyrics anywhere so far.
    Thanks!

  11. Thanks for all your comments everybody — the lyrics are not available online as far as I’m aware. But they are included on the group’s album. You can find details at their myspace page – just search for Black Sea Hotel. Thanks for listening!
