The debate in Washington over what the US should do in Afghanistan continues. President Barack Obama is considering a substantial troop increase after the American commander on the ground called for such a move in October. But this would not necessarily have widespread popular support. The World’s Jeb Sharp reports.

The pirates of Somalia are carrying out more and more high-seas hijackings of ships heading for the Gulf of Aden. The Paris-based group Doctors with Borders, often known by its French initials MSF, has been operating a community hospital in the southern Somali town of Jamaame since 2004. Earlier this year, MSF nurse and field coordinator Javier Roldan decided to photograph Somalis who came to the hospital.

The trio is thought to have crossed a poorly marked border by mistake while hiking in Iraq’s Kurdish region. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appealed for their release.
