Turkey’s government is working on legislation that would legalize the Kurdish language and establish a committee to fight discrimination. Most Turks know little about the Kurdish minority in their country. But a new documentary aims to change that. The World’s Aaron Schachter has the story.

    Your introduction into this report and the reporter incorrectly said speaking kurdish is banned in Turkey. in fact the Turkish state at the beginning of this year launched a tv station broadcasting solely in Kurdish.
    Kurdish books and newspapers have also been published for some time.
    While speaking Kurdish was banned in the 1980′s those restrictions have been lifted. Controls on private broadcasting in Kurdish have remained in force until recently most of these have not been lifted. Kurdish does still remain banned in education.
