The island that figures in today’s Geo Quiz just experienced an invasion of sorts. Langkawi Island was taken over last week by helicopters, warships, and surface-to-air missile launchers.
But it wasn’t a REAL military operation. Just an international Maritime and Aerospace technology show. This island in the Andaman Sea hosts the defense industry show every two years
25 countries put their military wares on display. Southeast Asian countries were especially interested in Russia’s Mirazh patrol boats ….used for combatting piracy and drug trafficking at sea.
So where is Langkawi Island that’s been showcasing the latest military technology? And what country does it belong to? Stick around for the answer.
OK — so we already know the name of the island in today’s Geo Quiz. It’s Langkawi Island.
The question was — where is it? Langkawi is in the Andaman Sea off the northwestern coast of Malaysia. The island just hosted a major military technology show, but it’s famous for something else. It’s been named a UNESCO GeoPark for its protected forests and beaches. Its coral reefs are a haven for divers and snorkelers. Plus its duty-free.

Although I can’t deny that I continue to learn from the quiz, I still have problems with the presentation.
I puzzled and scoured my atlas and dictionary without being entirely sure of the name ‘Langkawi’, which does not appear in either index although the name does appear on the maps in the atlas. However, the island is labelled Pulau Langkawi, using the Malay word for island.
And . . (as public broadcasters say) AND — is that island in the Andaman Sea or the Straits of Malacca?
