We’re looking for a Spanish port city in today’s Geo Quiz. This city is preparing to host the next America’s Cup sailing competition in February.

There’s been some doubt about the venue for this major international sailing event. But barring a last minute appeal, the race will be staged in Spanish waters. The likely host city has been the venue before.

This time the US team is going for America’s Cup glory with a radically redesigned yacht.

“Its very high performance, very light, very stiff, very strong but doesn’t take shock knock or abuse at all and so its out on the limit of engineering knowledge as we know it, and is a big step from anything ever done before.”

We reveal the name of the likely host city for the next America’s Cup…

The next America’s Cup is scheduled to get underway in February. This top international sailing competition will most likely be staged in the Mediterranean — near the Spanish port of Valencia.

And that’s the answer to our Geo Quiz today. We say most likely because there’s legal wrangling still going on over the venue. But the two teams are starting to ship their equipment to Valencia. The defending champion is from Switzerland — the team is called Alinghi. The challenger is from the United States — the BMW-Oracle team.

Oracle believes its got a winning yacht design up its sleeve. Just listen to team members describe their boat.

I have no interest in yacht racing, but I found it ironic that in today’s broadcast, the team described as “American” was represented by three men who were obviously not American- two Australians and one person from the Netherlands (or perhaps Germany or Scandinavia- I couldn’t really identify his slight accent in his excellent English).

This corporate extravagance of spending millions on yacht racing (for what real benefit?) as well as other sports sponsorships leaves me cold.

It seems to me that the BMW Oracle entry is in violation of the rules. When all three hulls are wetted, the in water length (along the diagonal) is longer than 90 feet.
