Our daily geography puzzler. Today we want to know where The Rolling Stones first recorded the song “Brown Sugar.” It was here in the United States. Anchor Marco Werman speaks with sound engineer Jimmy Johnson, who worked with The Rolling Stones 40 years ago on the first recording of Brown Sugar. The recording took place in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, which is the answer to our Geo Quiz today.

What’s your source for the date of this recording? I’ve looked around the web and found “December 1969″ or “early December 1969″ the wikipedia article says “December 2-4″ do you have a source for this?

nice to see my small home-town again recognized for its contributions to the music industry these last many, many years! lots of great acts recorded at Fame, Wishbone, Muscle Shoals Sound, etc.

Muscle Shoals and the Stones! Love Jimmy Johnson’s playing and work on all those great R&B tracks. Try and find his original rough mix of Brown Sugar as heard in the Doc “Gimme Shelter” about the Altamont debacle. I also have to contradict Jimmy Johnson, the film definitely shows Mick drinking a big bottle of something while listening to a rough mix of Wild Horses.
