Officials in Yemen have confirmed that the Nigerian man charged with attempting to blow up an airliner on Christmas day outside Detroit spent time in Yemen in recent months. In addition, a Yemeni-based al Qaeda affiliate has claimed responsibility for planning the failed plot. The Catholic Church in the United States faces many other challenges. Attendance at some of its churches are near empty, while others are full. The growth in the Church has come largely from immigrants, who often want to worship in their own language and style. Older churchgoers don’t always like that. On Christmas day, Robert Park carried with him a letter demanding that the Kim Jong il regime free political prisoners and has not been heard from since. While few enter North Korea at own their risk, still many more escape. But not all flee for political or human rights. There’s at least one refugee who defected for the love of boxing. Ghanaian drummer Victor Dogah

Victor DogahBack in June 2008, the BBC’s David Amanor introduced us to several musicians from the west African nation of Ghana. The men were attending an audition in the capital, Accra. They were vying for scholarships to the Berklee College of music in Boston. Berklee has long had contacts with musicians in Ghana. One of the percussionists we didn’t hear from that day was another extremely talented young drummer named Victor Dogah. Dogah ended up winning a scholarship to Berklee.
