Arachnophobes may want to take a pass on today’s Geo Quiz. Beware of the funnel web spider. One poisonous bite from its fangs, that’s right fangs and you could be a goner in 2 hours.
“The first symptoms are tingling around the mouth, and tongue swelling, and then your nose will be running, your eyes will be running.”
You get the picture. These deadly spiders are showing up in greater numbers this year…due to unseasonably humid weather.
Where? We thought you might like to know. It’s a major coastal city in the southern hemisphere. It’s surrounded by the Blue Mountains to the west, and the blue Pacific to the east.
And it’s just next door to the salt-marshes and mangrove woodlands of the Royal National Park. That should clue you into the fact that we’re talking about an Australian city in New South Wales.
And the city where these Funnel Web spiders are turning up is Sydney, the answer to our quiz.
“Within about 4 days we had 40 and now we’ve got probably about a couple hundred we’ve never seen so many come in so quickly.”
Mary Rayner is general manager at the Australian Reptile Park.
“The Australian Reptile Park is the sole supplier of funnel web and snake venom in Australia so we’ve set up drop off points around Sydney for members of the community to drop of spiders that they’ve actually caught.”
Catching these spiders is not for the faint of heart. They may not be very big, but the males are extremely aggressive. And their bite can even penetrate a sneaker.
“If you feel confident just placing a glass jar over the top remembering that most of these males will be sitting there being defensive with their fangs up in the air its very easy slide some thick cardboard secure lid they can’t jump they can’t climb up walls or up glass or anything like that.”
But Rayner urges caution. If you slip up and it bites you — and injects enough venom into your bloodstream — things can go south real fast.
“You’ll start salivating and frothing at the month, severe headaches, vomiting, the end result is your lungs start filling up with liquid and you drown…The quickest death recorded from the time of bite to time of death.”
Fortunately — there’s plenty of antidote around. So the death rate for bites from these funnel web spiders is less than 1 percent. And they’re found ONLY in and around Sydney, Australia — the answer to our Geo Quiz.
