We’re looking for the Gold Coast for today’s Geo Quiz. The question is… WHICH one?
There’s a region of West Africa that was known as the Gold Coast in colonial times. There’s also a stretch by the same name in Florida between Palm Beach and Miami. It supposedly got its name from the gold coins that used to wash up on the beaches from sunken Spanish galleons.
But we’re looking for ANOTHER Gold Coast… far away from those two places. This region’s in the news for something that happened there yesterday.
“We’re in the middle of summer now so its warm weather, so the beaches along the part of the coastline were quite packed over the weekend, on Sunday more than 40 people had to be rescued from the surf, quite a frantic day at the beach and the heroes of this day at the beach were two very little boys, they saved a man’s life.”
So where did this happen? We’ll reveal the answer — and tell you more about this Gold Coast rescue
And that’s the answer to our Geo Quiz today. The region is known for its great surfing beaches. But yesterday, crowded beaches and a rip tide combined to create dangerous conditions.
Dozens of swimmers and surfers had to be pulled out of the rough waters. Lifeguards did most of the rescuing. The BBC’s Phil Mercer tells us about one exception.
