We pay tribute to singer-songwriter Lhasa de Sela. Lhasa established her musical career in Montreal and in 1997 her debut album ‘La Llorona’ won the Canadian Juno Award for Best Global Artist. The bluesy, rootsy voice of Lhasa was silenced on New Year’s Day.

Sadly, Lhasa de Sela passed away on New Year’s Day. Just a few months ago, she had released a new album to much critical acclaim. Lhasa was born in upstate New York to a Mexican father and an American mother.

The family lived a nomadic existence. They travelled by school bus throughout the United States and Mexico. But eventually, Lhasa settled in Montreal, where she established her musical career.

Her first album ‘La Llorona’ was recorded in Spanish.

It was released in 1997.

That album won Lhasa praise and awards in Canada. She followed up with a second CD called “The Living Road.” It included songs in Spanish, French and English.

In 2005, Lhasa won a BBC World Music Award. Then — last spring — her third album came out, titled simply “Lhasa”

The CD came out several months after Lhasa had been diagnosed with breast cancer. The disease took Lhasa’s life on New Year’s Day. She was 37 years old.

    Hey CB,
    Welcome home!
Her piece rising is pretty amazing. I am wondering if we could use it in our doc.
