An economically divided Europe

Europe is dividing in two, economically. While countries like Germany and France emerge from recession, the so-called PIIGS countries (Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Spain) stand to sink further. That’s because interest rates are about to go up, making it harder for stressed governments to respond to the crisis. The World’s Gerry Hadden reports.

Assistance to Haiti’s earthquake survivors has been slow to arrive, in part because the quake destroyed the port in the capital, Port-au-Prince. And the airport only has one runway. The US military is managing the airport. Anchor Marco Werman speaks with Colonel Brian Reno, director of the Contingency Response Cell at the 618th Tanker Airlift Control Center. The Control Center is coordinating the airlift efforts for the humanitarian response in Haiti.

We close today with the story of Cambodian-American rapper Boomer Da Sharpshoota. He grew up in the US but he was deported seven years ago after serving a two-year prison sentence on gun convictions. Boomer now lives in Cambodia and he’s been learning to rap in Khmer. That’s no easy feat since it’s not the language he grew up speaking. Corey Takahashi has his story.

Dixie Bickel runs an orphanage about 15 miles out of Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince. She has over 150 children to look after and like many others in the country she is now waiting for help to arrive.
