Nuclear Standoff with Iran

ahmadi_natanz150President Barack Obama has said the US and its allies are developing a “significant regime of sanctions” against Iran for its nuclear program. He said the international community was unified over Iran’s “misbehavior”. Speaking in Washington, he said despite Tehran’s denials, it was clear Iran was working to build nuclear weapons. His remarks came after Iranian state media reported that Iran had started the process of enriching uranium to 20% for use in a medical research reactor.

Hero Pilot: ‘I thought I was going to die’

In his first media interview, the pilot of a British Airways jet which crash landed at London’s Heathrow airport two years ago has described the moment he thought would die. Captain Peter Burkill’s jet plane lost power in the final seconds of its approach to land. Captain Burkill describes how in the space of five seconds his prediction for the imminent hard-landing changed from 100% casualties to 50%. In the event, there was only one serious injury, and Captain Burkill and his crew were hailed as heroes.

NATO prepares big offensive against Taliban

Hundreds of villagers living in a Taliban-controled area of southern Afghanistan are leaving before a major NATO-led offensive gets under way. It is expected to be one of the largest counter-insurgency operations since the Afghan conflict began in 2001. The operation to clear insurgents from the southern town of Marjah, in Helmand province, is expected to begin soon. The BBC’s Frank Gardner is 90 miles east of Marjah in Kandahar. Download MP3

The police in Barcelona recently raided a suspicious looking dry cleaners. It was late at night and something fishy was going on. People were going in. But they weren’t coming out.
