President Barack Obama has asked Congress for $2.8 billion in emergency funds to help post-earthquake reconstruction efforts in Haiti. At least 220,000 people died in the January quake and more than a million lost their homes. The catastrophe took a heavy toll on the infrastructure including the nation’s postal service. Questions are being raised about whether Pope Benedict was personally involved in covering up a case of child sex abuse by a Roman Catholic priest. Documents seen by the New York Times newspaper suggest that in the 1990s, before he became pope then Cardinal Ratzinger failed to respond to letters about a US case. The Netherlands is grappling with an outbreak of a rare disease. It normally strikes farm animals, but it’s now sickening hundreds of people who have no contact with farms.
