Sadly, sports fans, the Winter Olympics are over. No more skeleton, no more biatholon, and no more ice dancing. So, what does the globetrotting sports fanatic have to look forward to now? Well, as Lonely Planet’s Robert Reid points out in this episode of Talking Travel, there is the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo! Yee-haw! However, perhaps a bit further down on some people’s lists (not) is the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa. Every four years, most of the globe grinds to a halt as 32 teams battle it out for soccer supremacy.  This year’s contest looks to be a good one, too, not in the least because it’s the first time the World Cup will take place in Africa. Here are some links to help you get your head around soccer mania, and what there is to see and do in South Africa.

Remember, you can follow The World on Twitter and Facebook.

Likewise, Lonely Planet is on both Facebook and Twitter.

The 1950 US World Cup team that destroyed England’s chances that year had a Scottish Captain, Ed McIllvanney – the only full professional on the team – as well as a Scottish Head Coach, Bill Jeffrey. The lone goal scorer, Joe Haetjens, was Haitian.

The International Football Federation rejected England’s protest that the US team had three foreigners on its team by stating that the three had applied for US citizenship.

The two Scots and inside-right Gino Pariani from St. Louis were inducted into the US National Soccer Hall of Fame.

So the US team was an international team and the English team were sore losers.

      Carol —

Many thanks for all of that juicy historical information about that US team. If memory serves, didn’t one of the England team quip just after the loss: “Bloody ridiculous…Can’t we play them again tomorrow?”

      Nope!

    Hi there!

I only have to say, it is very tempting to go down to South Africa and enjoy the sweet soccer “madness” of the World Cup.

As I was lucky enough to see the Olympics this year, it would just unbelievable to see also the Soccer World Cup. And coming from a rather soccer country (Czech Republic), it might be “a must” go (or at least watch) event.

Anyway, if I won’t go, I know who is going: Bob is traveling from the Czech Republic overland to Africa to see the World Cup. He has some gorgeous pictures and notes from down the road. (This is his blog: bobulix.ontheroad.to. It’s in Czech language.) It is fun to watch his adventure and I am really curious, if he is going to make it. 63 days to go…

As we say in Czech: “Dotoho!” (Meaning Go! or Hit it!)
