In 1991 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland our electric company offered us a “time of use” plan which priced the energy we used on the time of day when the electric company had the greatest demand.

We found it highly motivating to have a 10-30% savings on our electricity price, so my roommate and I started did laundry and ran the dishwasher late at night to save money.

I’ve lived in Montgomery County now for 17 years and have never been offered this option. Our company has paid us to put a control on our AC unit so they can shut it off if they have high demand. I think radio controlled appliances would not be necessary if the electric company would simply offer cost savings for using electrcity at night when the demand is low.

I would be glad if you used my comment on the air.
