Resistance to mosque in New York

Several new mosques are to be built in the New York City area. One is planned for a residential neighborhood in Brooklyn. Some there worry about increased noise and traffic. 50 years ago this month, Congo became an independent nation. Formerly, it was the Belgian Congo, and Belgium’s colonial legacy in the African nation is controversial, to say the least. In the early 1930s, Belgian cartoonist Hergé sent his intrepid boy reporter Tintin to Congo. But now, ‘Tintin in the Congo’ is the subject of a lawsuit in Belgium, a lawsuit brought by a Congolese immigrant. The World’s Clark Boyd reports from Brussels. Download MP3

Israel eases Gaza blockade

Israel has announced it will ease the land blockade of the Gaza Strip and allow more civilian goods to enter the Palestinian territory. An Israeli commando raid on an aid flotilla attempting to break the naval blockade of Gaza last month was widely condemned. Israel and Egypt tightened the blockade after the Islamist Hamas movement took control of Gaza in 2007. Marco Werman talks with the BBC’s John Donnison who is in Gaza.
