Audio Slideshow: Idi Amin Slept Here

The Ducor hotel in the Liberian capital of Monrovia was once considered one of the finest hotels in all of Africa. The hotel shut its doors shortly after civil war erupted in Liberia in 1989. During the war, the Ducor became home to thousands of squatters; several dozen remain today. A Libyan company now has plans to revamp the old hotel. A few old employees of the Ducor took reporter Jason Margolis around for a tour.

Thank you for the report. To see the images was sad, but it was heartwarming to hear the voices of those who once worked there. My parents lived in Monrovia in the late ’60s and early ’70s — during the heyday of the Ducor. It was THE place — an oasis of luxury. Perhaps it can be restored to its magnificence again.

    Sad, Sad, Sad.
It’s only a ‘thing’ but is not beauty better to behold than war and destruction?
    G_d save us.
