Pakistan is fighting against a Taliban-led militant insurgency in the north of the country. But there is another, altogether different guerilla war being waged in western Pakistan. Baloch separatists say their ethnic community has been excluded and oppressed by Islamabad for over sixty years. The World’s Fahad Desmukh reports the battle is not just being fought by fighters, but by musicians as well. (Photo: Dr. Shaggy/Wikipedia) Download MP3

Glad to see that Balochi resistance music is introduced here properly. Music is very inspiring to the Baloch and has played an important role throughout the known history of the Baloch. Right from the 15th and 16th century war epics to the nationalistic and resistance songs of present times, music has always mirrored the socio-political trends in Balochistan. Like other fields of study, this important field has also been neglected by an impartial and unbiased scholarship, and I am glad to see that Mr Fahad Desmukh of “The World” has prepared a good piece to introduce the topic.

Even though I personally have nothing to do with the conflict in Pakistan, I found it very offensive and inappropriate that you would promote and give such a stage to terrorist song. Would you have done about songs supporting Al Quaida? Or the popular hate and anti Semitism filled songs of Hamas and Hezbollah? Maybe on another part of the show to demonstrate how music could be used to promote hatred and violence (resistance is a euphemism for terrorist guerilla) but it doesn’t belong in the beautiful gem that is the Global Hit which usually shows how music brings people and cultures together.

If you can imagine one country worse than Iran, Saddam’s Iraq, Mugabe’s Zimbabwe, Kin jon Yil’s N Korea, Hitler’s Germany, Charles Taylor’s Liberia – this is it!

They export nuke tech (infamous nuke wal-mart), terrorism – as well exposed by UK’s PM, practice islamo fascism – exposed by USA’s BUSH, traffic in counterfeit – exposed by India’s Central Bank, cause havoc like Charles Taylor etc. Yet none has been hauled to the HAGUE or ICC. What an irony!!! Or is it subversion of universal humane values or perverse under-cutting of human rights of every global citizen?!!!

the barrel of the gun obviously a source to relize the islamabad and the imperialist powers to understand and listen the voice of the opressed, but the music with harmony and love also a source for the baloch nation and also for other who hav being slave by the barbarian powers is sound to understand and come forward in the battle field when they listen the revoloutionary songs for thier mother land and for those who r fighting in the mountains, deserts and forests to give us a prosperious bright future and an identity.

lol.. the music you have as link has absolutely nothing to do with the minority Balochi separatists.

  • J kalmati

Baloch people have a history to maintain and preserve their history through music and ballads,if a baloch
singer or musician dont have a music about baloch history or baloch than probably he is not a very popular among Baloch masses.@ Afridi Baloch might be a minority in your eye but without Balochistan your pakistan is nothing.
