It’s been a busy week for Mideast diplomats. The US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Middle East envoy George Mitchell met with Israeli and Palestinians leaders numerous times over several days. Africa’s Ajami writing system

When Sub-Saharan Africans converted to Islam more than a thousand years ago, they did so using a modified Arabic text known as Ajami. Today, Ajami is a whole writing system used by many Africans to conduct business transactions, to keep family histories, and to write poetry.     Pope urges Britain to resist secularism

    Pope Benedict has said he wants to “extend the hand of friendship” to the whole of the UK during his visit. He also urged the British to resist “more aggressive forms of secularism” after being welcomed by Queen Elizabeth II in Edinburgh. Tens of thousands of people attended an open-air Mass in Glasgow, while Protestants, secularists, and other groups had planned protests against Vatican policies on birth control, gay rights and abortion, although police did not report any large demonstrations.     Mexico celebrates 200 years of independence today, and this year also marks 100 years since the Mexican Revolution. While a deadly drug war clouds the celebration, a forgotten revolution marches on in Chiapas. The Zapatistas, an army of indigenous campesinos, took Mexico by surprise in 1994.
