For this Geo Quiz, follow the ocean blue. The warm ocean we know as the Gulf Stream originates near the southern tip of Florida. It heads north up along the US coastline and up past Newfoundland. There, it’s called the North Atlantic Drift, because it sweeps across the Atlantic.
About a year ago, some high schoolers in Melbourne Florida focused on the the Gulf Stream for their marine science project. They wrote messages in bottles and tossed them into the Atlantic. A year later, some of the bottles washed up far from Florida.
The question is where? One turned up 37-hundred miles away near a small fishing village on the west coast of Ireland. County Clare to be more precise. Now see if you can pinpoint the peninsula that juts out into the Atlantic there where the bottle washed up.
The answer to today’s Geo Quiz is the Loop Peninsula, Country Clare, Ireland. That’s where a message n a bottle washed up recently, carried all the way from Florida (3700 miles away) by the Gulf Stream. The bottle belongs to a student at Melbourne High School in Florida who was studying ocean currents.
