Independence referendum in South Sudan (Photo: Sean Carberry)
It’s a rare thing for new countries to emerge but that’s what might just happen in Africa in a couple of months. A referendum has been scheduled that could split Sudan in two. It’s the final phase of the peace agreement that ended the decades-long civil war in Sudan. Polls show that most southerners want to secede and become an independent nation. Sean Carberry is a reporter with PRI’s America Abroad. He’s in Malakal in southern Sudan. Download MP3

It looks like South Sudan is going to get its vote of independence in the referendum. Perhaps that means that other African de facto states (Somaliland and Western Sahara spring to mind) will get their chance to vote for their just nationhood as well.
