But geographers sometimes argue over the precise boundaries of this ocean. For example most of this ocean’s boundaries don’t touch land. Instead, they merge into the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans. So can you name this icy ocean that’s on average 13-16 thousand feet deep?
Another clue? In the year 2000, the International Hydrographic Organization declared it to be the fifth and newest ocean.
The answer is the Southern Ocean, one of the world’s major oceans that figures in the new Atlas of the Oceans: An Ecological Survey of Underwater Life. Achor Marco Werman talks with author John Fardon about the enormous scope of the book.
