I interact regularly with several sprightly, articulate and friendly Pakistanis on twitter. All of them have extremely liberal and progressive views, and I have learnt many life lessons from all of them. Interacting with them was very reassuring, for I thought, you know, these guys are just like us over in India.

However, from the reactions to Salman Taseer’s death in Pakistan, I’ve come to the realization, that these people I interact with are the only liberal folk left in Pakistan. The 20-30 odd Pakistanis I follow on twitter and their families are probably 99% of the liberal space in that country.

The rest is just a collection of vile murderers, sickos and basket-cases, who also happen to control a clutch of nuclear weapons.

For instance, when the facebook page praising the assassin was created, my twitter friends tried to talk the creators of the page out of it, only for the entire community to call for these liberal types to be murdered. There were demands for circulating “their photographs or videos”.

    Sick.
