Salt from Mexico

Today might be the first day of spring but some parts of the US are still dealing with snow and ice. So for today's geo quiz, we're tracking a shipment of rock salt, the kind used to de-ice snowy roads. The shipment of salt in question arrived in the eastern United States not too long ago. It came from Mexico. And that's where you come in. We're looking for a Mexican island where a lot of industrial sea-salt is processed. This island is in the Pacific Ocean, just off the coast of Mexico's Baja California peninsula. The place got its name from Spanish explorers who mistakenly thought the island's trees were cedars. So what's cedar in Spanish? Geo Answer: The answer is Cedros Island. Reporter Chris Burrell recently visited a port in Chelsea, Massachusetts, where road salt from Mexico and many other countries is unloaded.
