Unlike the grueling Tour de France or the Giro d’Italia, the Doyenne is a one-day race. It traverses the Ardennes, a hilly region of Belgium that figured in both world wars. The race starts and ends in a Belgian city we want you to to name.
This city’s famous for its long stairway. It ascends 400 steps from the Meuse River to a hilltop citadel. So name this city that hosts a venerable Belgian bicycle race….
The answer is Liège, Belgium. For over 100 years, the city has hosted the Liège–Bastogne–Liège, one of Europe’s most famous bike races. Producer Murray Carpenter sent us an audio postcard from Liège.
