Palestinian Cartoonist Accused of Anti-Semitism

Majed Badra Cartoon

Majed Badra should be in the United States right now. Almost a year ago, the political cartoonist from Gaza was invited by the State Department to be part of an International Visitor program for political cartoonists from the Middle East and South Asia.

It was a great opportunity. Badra would get to visit to the United States for the first time. He’d spend time with American cartoonists, find out how they learned their craft, look at the issue of humor and art in activism, and take on the thorny subject of press freedom.

Then on June 10th, with visa approved and plane ticket in hand, Badra got a phone call. It was the US consul’s office in Jerusalem saying his visa had been rescinded and the trip was off. The reason, the consul said, was that some of the cartoons on Badra’s website were “anti-Semitic and extremely objectionable.”

Badra was crushed and says the cartoons were misinterpreted. “I am not anti-Semitic or anti-Jewish.” says Badra. “I respect all religions. I just want to express that I am against Israeli occupation and against extremist settlers.”

Badra is young, only 26. He’s spent his whole life in Gaza and his cartoons reflect that. Most are not anti-semitic. They’re about the hard truths of living with Israeli occupation, having his movements and lifestyle restricted by the Israeli army, and suffering through a war with Israel in 2008 and 2009. But several of the cartoons do touch a raw nerve. One shows what appears to be a religious Jew, with fangs, wearing a yarmulka with a Nazi symbol. Another shows former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert in front of an Israeli flag. The star of David has been replaced with a Nazi symbol. And the figure of Olmert sports a Hitler mustache.

Israeli political cartoonist Michel Kichka had this reacton after looking at the offending cartoons. “You have a right as a cartoonist to make mistakes in your cartoons. But I think these are very bad mistakes.”

Michel Kishka is an Israeli political cartoonist. Kishka is involved in Cartooning for Peace, an organization founded by the French cartoonist Plantu that recognized the power of cartoons and seeks to use that power responsibly and creatively. Kichka said he has Majed Badra’s explanations for the cartoons but he’s not sure Badra really gets it. “He has to be very aware of what he did. He has to understand what the Holocaust was and what the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is. And once he understands this, we can talk together.”

For his part, Badra says he never meant to criticize the Jewish people, just the Israeli occupation but he now knows that some of his images offended Jews so he doesn’t use them anymore. Still, Badra is puzzled about why the State Department rescinded his invitation to the United States when part of the purpose of the trip is to discuss and support freedom of speech and freedom of the press.

” I don’t know what freedom they are going to discuss. They prevent me from traveling to the US to participate in this program because I say my opinion and give the world the truth of our life.”

Uri Fink is an Israeli cartoonist and comic strip artist who is also involved in Cartooning for Peace and in getting Palestinian and Israeli cartoonists to get to know one another.

He says Badra has the right to draw anti-Semitic cartoons. “Know yourself out! What do I care? I have the right to be offended. I don’t see any hordes of Jews running in the streets burning a Palestinian embassy because of these cartoons. These are just bad cartoons. ”

Neither Uri Fink nor Michel Kichka were willing to comment on whether Badra’s invition to the US should have been rescinded. But both men believe Badra is young for a cartoonist, that he needs guidance and exposure to the outside world — especially other cartoonists — to really flourish. Michel Kichka says that’s it is his own friendships with Palestinians, for example, that inform his cartoons on the Arab-Israeli conflict. “I take them into consideration and I hope that they will understand and react in a positive way to what I’m doing and understand that I do what I do because I also suffer. Not only them. I also suffer because of the situation. ”

Majed Badra has taken down the offending cartoons from his website and is hoping he’ll get another chance to visit the United States. The State Department says it regrets the “inconvenience experienced by Mr. Badra” and that this incident doesn’t prevent Majed Badra from participating in future exchange programs.

This afternoon, you ran a piece by Carol Hills on the visa problems of a  Gaza cartoonist. Ms. Hills kept talking of Majed Badra as objecting to Israeli occupation.

It is Hamas that now rules Gaza, not Israel – and has for some years. It was Gazans that elected them.  Moreover, the border with Egypt is nominally open (though that has turned out to be a sham). It is the residents of gaza who fell free to hand out sweets every time there is a successful attack on Israeli civilians.

Maybe Carol Hills is implying that all of Israel is occupied land – something often said by Palestinians. But at least The World should end the incessant, inaccurate, and biased refrain, about Israeli occupation.

As for the situation in Gaza: see the new waterpark for children pictured at

I applaud The World for showing us just how petty our own government can be (seemingly) on Israel’s behalf. Shame on you State Dept. Shame.

Denying this experience (and at the last second…) for personal growth, to this young cartoonist from the hell hole that is still Gaza, is plain stupid, and seems to go against the very reason for the program, which is to open minds & increase dialog. So he drew a Hitler mustache & a Nazi symbol on a couple cartoons, as commentary related to the occupying government, that basically made Gaza a sealed internment camp for 40+ years? Are you kidding me? the right wing of this country routinely does that so often to pictures of President Obama, Fox News doesn’t even bother to show it on TV anymore. Your actions only give further fuel to the notion, that a Zionist minded lobby does indeed control the actions (even petty one like this) of our government; this isn’t true, right?

No, this is not a blanket excuse for drawing Hitler stashes (which in most cases seems pretty juvenile)  but grow up US State Dept. and help the kid do the same – or – would you rather encourage the expression of views throughout Palestine/Israel with a different tool, say something less mightier, but rather more deadlier than a pen?

Ps. Dorn’s blog post above points to a water park in Gaza as evidence that Gaza seems like a GREAT place to grow up now. So Dorn – did you mean the water park that was burnt down last Sept?, and that it mainly served Gaza’s small elite class, while “80% of the population still receive welfare payments from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East and other international aid agencies.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crazy_Water_Park#cite_note-Habib-1

Your arguments resemble a poorly made cup of coffee (or tea if you prefer) – weak, pale, and just plain bitter…

Charles said it all and well especially with reference to the nonsense claims that Dorn posted about how great things are there in that 6×22 mile open cage called Gaza. Water parks when there is not adequate safe clean drinking water due to the bombing damage of the sewer plant and the water treatment facility.  Inadequate food due to the caloric restrictions that Occupation govt allows into the Gaza & agricultural produce from Israel instead of helping the farmers in Gaza return to sustaining themselves as much soil is now contaminated with unknown bomb materials such as depleted uranium and other toxics.
When talking with a Congressional staffer who explained that there was nothing they could do since the Embassy is now stating that “anti Semitic drawings” have NOTHING to do with his Visa problem..(as of this morning that is the new story ) and visa resolution rests only in the hands of the Consulate.  No one wants to accept responsibility for making this ridiculous charade out of the original idea enabling a young ambitious and gentle cartoonist to travel and see that there is a life beyond the walls and fences.

I’m sorry, but are you blaming Israel for Hamas developing a water park instead of providing clean water? How much power are you expecting Israel to have over these people who are shooting missiles their way? There’s no winning some and losing some with Palestinian supporters. It’s an all or nothing, scorch the Earth approach.

Anyone interested in Middle East politics needs to realize that most people posting their anti-Israel gibberish on the internet aren’t really worth much of a darn in the first place. Do research and you will discover that Arabs in the region had plenty of opportunities at co-existence, from the 1947 split to the 2008 Olmert offer that included East Jerusalem. Each time, the response to Israel was violence.

      It’s a super swell universe, ain’t it?

It’s curious how Israel can occupy someone’s land, expand settlements on this occupied land, and label the idividuals who fight against occupation as “terrorists”, but if someone dare draw a cartoon comparing these oppressors to the Nazis he or she is anti-semitic. It’s time for the Jewish people to stop hiding behind this diversion each time someone criticizes them for their heinous injustices. There will be peace in Israel when there is justice. Oh and I don’t think the Zionist state needs any more sympathy from the U.S. than the $7 million it receives from us on a daily basis.

Actually what’s curious is that somebody can insist over and over again how Israel is “occupying someone else’s land” and expect to be taken seriously. Israel, through diplomacy, bought land from the Ottoman’s for their own. Israel, through diplomacy, made concessions and agreements with the Brits. Israel, through diplomacy, maintained her presence in the region for the past 64 years. But those Arabs…. who have 23 countries, including Jordan (which was a 74% chunk part of the original Mandate of Palestine), and who practice Apartheid, and who kill folks for normal relations with Jews and Israelis… those people are sweet innocents, right? The dastardly Jews have turned them into wounded warriors.

And then you want to bring up money without mentioning what OPEC gets from America. Right, because everyone knows the real foreign power structure in America is AIPAC! Hey, why the phuck not? This idiotic based bigotry of yours has worked so well for so long, no reason in letting history, logic, reason, and (gasp) reality budge your bullshit.

And you’re not an anti-Semite or anything. Jews are fine as long as they stay the hell away from the Middle East. Thank goodness for rampnat assholes like you, Ramy.

Interesting that this whole thing began about 10 days ago with the Consul Gen calling Majed to inform him that his Visa was cancelled and passport held up because of these suddenly discovered ‘anti Semitic’ drawings which have been on the internet for years. Would artists who were encaged in Warsaw ghetto depicted a benevolent enemy then? why should this artist do so now?
What is odd about this issue now however is that the Consulate is now denying that ‘anti Semitic’ drawings were the issue…rather they have had a paperwork problem and the Visa has just been “held up”- I was told that if might be released any day now…”too bad the program already started”. Is Diplomacy a great thing or what??
