Rasheed Kappan and Political Cartoons from India

Rasheed Kappan's "Sign Lanes Zone"

Rasheed Kappan's "Sign Lanes Zone"

Newspapers might be under pressure in the United States, but they’re in rude health in India. A range of broadsheets and other papers are published across the country and many feature that satirical staple: the political cartoon. I met with Rasheed Kappan in Bangalore. He’s City Bureau Chief for the Deccan Herald, the city’s second largest daily. Kappan is also a long-time cartoonist and presents a few of his works — and of other influential Indian cartoonists — here.

Very true. Rasheed depiction is quite true and is a new voice for the voiceless through the medium of cartoons.

Rasheed, I find your point of view very simple and true. Perhaps the reasons are that it is both something I empathize with, and also, something that is extremely insightful. Good luck buddy!!!!

Thanks for your comments, all. Are there any other cartoonists from India we in the US ought to be aware of, besides the ones Rasheed Kappan mentions? One of things we talked about–but I didn’t have room to include–was the healthy tradition of cartooning in the state of Kerala (where Kappan himself hails from).

Abdul Rasheed Kappan has captured the dark side of the IT city with elan. His simple strokes give a brilliant insight into what lurks behind the glass facades.

Congratulations Rasheed. This is very impressive and recognition you rightly deserve. I have seen and been an admirer of your art and I have been fortunate enough to see several of them. I actually feel jaded, because I have see your art literally every day, since several of your pieces occupy space in our restaurant in Bangalore and I get to see them on a the daily basis. The art on it’s own is pretty impressive, but I am more impressed with the statements embedded in each and every piece of your art.
