Captain Planet is an LA-based DJ who takes world beats from old scratchy vinyl and mixes them into something new. Captain Planet shares with us two songs from his new album “Cookin’ Gumbo.”
I share your love for world music and appreciate how you’re making new from old.
My father played an album called “Amandala” by the “ANC Cultural Workers” when I was a little girl. It was powerful in its political anti-apartheid messages and just plain good music. I bet it would be a goldmine of material for your work. I’ve had a hard time tracking down the album in any form but you may know better where to look. It was recorded in 1980 at “The Swedish Labour Movement Record Company” and “The African National Congress” is listed as a Production credit.
I’ve also attached a photo of the LP cover, which is pretty cool itself. Let me know if you find it please!

Hey Jessica,
That LP sounds amazing! I absolutely love South African music. I think growing up with my parents playing Paul Simon’s “Graceland” on repeat is a big reason why African music never seemed too foreign to me. Thomas Mapfumo from Zimbabwe (another musician with strong political messages) was another early influence.
If you’re willing to spend a bit of money, I found the original Amandla LP available from this guy in the UK: http://www.retrobloke.com/more/on/details/014967
Also looks like the group have another album that can be downloaded here: http://electricjive.blogspot.com/2011/04/join-party-pt-2.html
And after reading that blog post I see that the musical director was Jonas Gwangwa. I have a very funky LP from him and that makes me even more interested in this Amandla LP. Here’s a little bit of info on the record I have from Mr. Gwagwa: http://www.dustygroove.com/item.php?id=fp7jyyw6bf
Can you tell I’m a music nerd yet? Haha.

Hey Aba_Baba,
Quick list of a few Indian records I love:
- Kalyanji & Anandji “DON Soundtrack” (this was the movie & soundtrack that made me fall in love with Bollywood)
- Asha Bhosle & R.D. Burman “Live at The Royal Albert Hall 1978″ (“Dum Maro Dum” is amazing)
- Ananda Shankar “Ananda Shankar & His Music” (funky drums & psychedelic moog mixed with excellent sitar playing)
- Usha Uthup – “24 Carats” (includes a Hindi cover version of Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop Til You Get Enough” among others)
The list could go on and on… I also listen to a lot of devotional recordings from India & Pakistan as well.

Hey everybody!
Thanks for listening to the segment. Keep the obscure record suggestions coming, I love em. Also, I just wanted to give you proper links to Captain Planet related things since there are a couple people out there using the name.
Charlie B,
Loved the sounds tonight on The World. Keep up the good work! It is always great to hear people making great new sounds. I am a big nut for fusion as well, so you definitely hit the sweet spot there. As soon as you mentioned African music (I have traveled to Egypt and then studied Arabic for many years as a result), I thought of a little gem I found in a record store up at the University of Minnesota. I tried to search for a vinyl, but to no avail. Maybe you will have better luck. The group is Aisha Kandisha’s Jarring Effects (Moroccan). The album I was thinking of (the only one I’ve heard, but if the others are as fantastic as this, they won’t steer you wrong) is called Shabeesation. I did find a vinyl copy of another of their albums here http://www.cdandlp.com/item/2/0-181001-0-1-0/113890264/aisha-kandisha’s-jarring-effects-el-buya.html. I haven’t heard it though, so if you spend the $140 dollars on it and it is awful, I offer my apologies. Thanks again for brightening up my worknight.

Cool sounds Warren. I’ve never heard of this group. Those North African rhythms are such trance inducers!
Here’s one of my favorite fusion records from Morroco (“Gift of the Gnawa” ft. Don Cherry): http://www.amazon.com/Gift-Gnawa-Hassan-Hakmoun-Rudolph/dp/B000000MRPAnd going all the way back to the 60′s, this musical madman was mixing latin rhythms, soul music and jazz with Egyptian traditions: http://djuilson.blogspot.com/2008/06/salah-ragab-and-cairo-jazz-band.html

Hey Charlie,
There are a couple Balkan brass albums you might want to check out especially from Serbian brother Boban and Marko Markovic and also from the legend Goran Bragovic. The percussion in this music is some of the most unique I have heard. They also play with these specially designed flutter trumpets which allow them get some crazy speed in their playing. I just got back from a trip to Serbia and couldn’t get enough of the music there.
Here is Boban and Marko’s website, take a listen to the first track, “Mundo Chochek”: http://www.myspace.com/bobanimarko

Hey David,
I’m actually very familiar with Boban & Marko’s music. It’s amazing that I can play their songs when I DJ at clubs (at the right venues) and crowds who’ve never heard of Balkan brass music will totally lose it and dance like crazy to these songs. There’s some really tasteful remixes out there of this style of music as well.
Here’s one of my favorites from a few years back. “Trans Balkan Express” (Balkan cover of Kraftwerk’s paradigm shifting classic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3Jz8OWMdcA
