Soul Brothers Lost and Found

CD Jacket for "South Africa" featuring Soul Brothers

CD Jacket for "South Africa" featuring Soul Brothers

How could I have been so careless? I wiped out an entire list of music by mistake. I meticulously categorize every piece of music we feature between our reports and interviews on The World.

But during a brief bout of spring cleaning madness that overwhelmed me this past September, I accidentally deleted a vital list of songs and their sources.

One tap on the keyboard and my beloved list was sent to cyberspace oblivion.

Complete and utter despair.

What was I to do? I had to update my Music Heard on The World page, and I had featured a fabulous piece of music on our October 6th broadcast, just before our interview with The World’s very own Carol Hills on political cartoons in India.

The song starts off with a funky bit of 1970′s electric organ and then this full horn, guitar, drums, wall of sound comes swaying in to create a beautifully smooth but energized beat.

Sadly I no longer had the song’s name, artist or album title.

All I had was the music and the name I gave the soundfile, “SOULBRO”.

A desperate scramble on the Internet began. I searched music databases, lists and archives for 2 days and finally, through sheer tenacity, I found it:

SONG: Ujaheni
ARTISTS: Soul Brothers
CD TITLE: Putumayo: South Africa
Find it on Amazon

The Soul Brothers have been around since 1974. They were inspired by American soul music but put their own South African township spin on it that’s called mbaqanga.

Check out this Music.org.za article for more background on the Soul Brothers.

Soul Bros found. Complete and utter contentment.
