For the Geo Quiz, we’re focusing on one of the international offshoots of the ‘Occupy Wall Street’ movement.

In the United States, the attention of the ‘Occupy’ movement has shifted lately to Oakland, California.

There was violence there on Wednesday as demonstrators smashed windows and clashed with police.

Nothing like that in Toronto, Canada.

There are some tensions with authorities there, too but so far no violence.

One thing the protesters in Toronto are worried about is the cold. They’ve been camping out in a city park since mid-October.

The park is named after the Anglican Cathedral right next to it.

Can you name that park?

The answer is St. James Park. Anchor Lisa Mullins speaks with Toronto Star reporter Josh Tapper about the Central Asian style tent homes called gers or yurts that have popped up in St. James Park.

I object to your statement that “demonstrators smashed windows and clashed with police.” This is misleading, and inaccurate.  The reality is that after a long day when 5,000 thousand people participated in a peaceful series of protests, in the late night/early morning hours, a group of Anarchists who frequently appear at Bay Area protests, took advantage of the late hour and absence of demonstrators to smash windows and vandalize.  These people had been condemned and in some cases physically restrained by demonstrators during the daylight hours when they managed only a few window smashings.  Photos of the window breaking without exception have captured pictures of these goons easily identified by their garb: all black and black ski masks.  So the term “demonstrators” is inappropriate. It is, indeed possible, that some of these vandals were agents provacateurs.

is the Occupy group running the risk of just becoming another part of mainstream society?  If the cities have allowed them to move into parks more or less permanently, and are not raising any fuss about it, it seems that their protest message is being lost.
