Winter Solstice, Kwanza, Chanukah, Christmas. ‘Tis the season that’s the burden of this studio Director.
While the rest of the populace begins the yearly frenzy to find the perfect present, I’m on the quest to find kick ass holiday music that has a touch of the traditional fused with the unexpected.
But most of all the music has to get our listeners swaying to a cool multi-culti beat.
Our program doesn’t go with the obvious.
Those dreamy, dulcet tones of your traditional fare won’t make it on our broadcast.
So if you want Bing Crosby’s White Christmas, disappointment awaits you.
No grandma’s meeting their maker by reindeer here.
Nope!
Hence my quandary. Where can I find cool holiday music that works for our broadcast?
Since we were speaking of reindeer…I can always go by one of my old standbys, the Reindeer Room Collection.
The artists featured have a deft hand at mixing modern sounds with your old favorites. Often you can’t tell it’s a holiday tune until you’re half way through the piece: GOD REST YE MERRY GENTLEMEN.
And Christmas isn’t the only holiday they celebrate:
MAOZ TAZUR and MI YMALEIL.
I love these mixes but I need something new.
MOCEAN WORKER AND DUKE ELLINGTON TO THE RESCUE!
There’s also the Robbie Hardkiss remix of Duke Ellington’s Jingle Bells.
I’ll be spinning these and other new sounds for the next few weeks, so tune in, rock out and have a Happy Winter!
