PRI is reporting this sad news in Greece as if it has never happened before. Please check the history of the 1930′s in the US during the Great Depression. My mother’s parents placed their five children in an orphanage because they could not feed them as did thousands of other parents. Thank goodness for those Children’s Homes. The Greek government is making a big mistake taxing the charities that may be those children’s best chance of survival.

The major difference with the 1930s Great Depression in the US and the situation in 2012 Greece is that Greece is part of the club of the rich since the early 1980s- the European Union – and it’s the major players, Germany and France, whose banks generously allowed people to get into major debt up to three years ago, who now demand from the Greek government to explore new sources of taxation so that the 100%+ interest on their loans towards the country can be repayed… the sad issue here is that the strong powers of Europe carry out an economic experiment with a country who went through 2 world wars, a civil war, a military junta and managed during these last 70 years to keep its dignity.
