A friendly Sphinx extends his paw to cast a vote while ancient pyramids are turned into ballot boxes and voting booths in these cartoons about Egypt’s historic elections. But look closely, one ballot box turns out to be a mirage and another is being clutched by a group that doesn’t want to let go: Egypt’s military. The World’s Carol Hills narrates.

It’s no surprise that the Egyptian Military has been spreading rumors & accusations against the people who brought the change to Egyptian society, and are primarily responsible for the closest thing to “free elections” in Egyptian history.

Our country (U.S.) has tried to maintain the appearance of “even-handedness” in the region by giving very large sums of money to the Israelis & the Egyptians; and the chief recipient in Egypt has been the military establishment. As a consequence, they control a large & varied economy, with factories, resort hotels, and other business ventures that has been funded by American “aid” (as well as a way for American arms manufacturers to maintain a business relationship there).

Now, “we” find ourselves in the position of supporting the reactionary cultural forces, that “we” have provided for, as they slander the Egyptian civilian population that helped create the “Arab Spring”. In other words, our “clients”- the generals- are doing everything they can to protect their “interests”… and that includes playing off Islamist interests against the secular and Coptic  members of the greater community.

It has been glaringly transparent how Mubarak has remained in power for all those years. So, what camp will the U.S.A. find itself in, as the Egyptians struggle to embrace democracy… and give their people an opportunity to be seen & heard (to one another & the outside world)?
