CERN Announces Discovery of Higgs-like Particle

The discovery of a new sub-atomic particle is being described as “momentous” and a true milestone. Scientists believe it is the long-sought Higgs boson — sometimes called the “God particle” — which gives matter mass and holds the physical fabric of the universe together. Host Marco Werman challenges The World’s Science Editor David Baron to explain just what the Higgs boson is and why it’s considered so important. Marco then speaks with physicist Jordan Nash of Imperial College London, a member of one of the teams that found the particle, about what comes next.

    The Higgs haiku:

Now we want you to wax eloquent on the discovery of the Higgs boson. Give us your best haiku. That’s three lines — five syllables in the first, seven in the second, and five in the third — and we’ll read our favorites on air. Submit your Higgs haiku here

    Higgs field permeates
    Empty space in CERN Hadron
    God gives matter mass

    Elementary,
that spark so long sought after:
    the god particle.

    I, mostly nothing,
    causing others to have mass;
    for long, just theory.

    Eyes glaze as brain strains.
    Sad; matter and mass produce
    only nothingness.

    Space isn’t empty
Matter has mass, so we’ve said
    Now we can prove it

Here are a number of haiku poems written about the Higgs Boson, dating back to 2009 when the lab was first opened: http://www.wayfarergallery.net/haikunews/?tag=higgs-boson

Also – you may be interested to know that English language haiku do not necessarily follow a 5-7-5 pattern, because of the quantitative differences between Japanese sound symbols and the English syllable: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haiku_in_English

    Wet flint in winter,
    Phoenix, shadow of a spark,
    Tell us something true.

    If I name my love
And she does not show herself –
    No world yet, no time.

    To reach to farthest small
The Sun glares too large, too bright
    To show true Shadow.

    Higgs Boson “weighs down,”
    Or gives mass to particles…
    A great find at CERN.

Yeah, I know, this is so months ago, but I didn’t know about this haiku thing then. So, here’s one off the top of my head!
