Guns Nearby, Rebel Fighters Pause to Clean a Street in Hope of Winning Supporters

With a showdown between rebels and Syrian forces anticipated in the commercial hub of Aleppo, a group of antigovernment fighters spent time on Thursday currying favor with the local population by cleaning a street in the city’s Sakhour neighborhood, which for the moment was under rebel control. The men, some with assault rifles slung over their shoulders, packed garbage into a bulldozer and used the hose on a tractor to spray the road.
