Where in the World Can You Find a Good Burger?

Our Geo Quiz might make you a little hungry.

So who doesn’t love old-fashioned diners? You know, the ones with red vinyl booths, and Route 66 signs hanging on the wall? And where thick milkshakes and cheesy burgers are served up 24-7?

We’re looking for the Starlite Diner and it’s not off any US interstate highway. It’s nowhere near Route 66.

Actually it’s closer to the Pushkinskaya and Chekhovskaya metro stops.

The diner’s TV screens are tuned to the Olympics this summer so customers don’t miss their their hometown athletes on the Russian gymnastic team.

So where is this Starlite Diner that serves up a great strawberry shake for about 300 rubles?

The Starlite Diner in Moscow has a reputation for serving up some of the best burgers in the world.

That’s according to Megan Steintrager who’s something of a hamburger expert. She’s an editor at Gourmet Live – and she tells The World how she compiled a list of the “World’s Best Burgers” including burgers from Moscow’s Really Big Shawn Burger, Paris’ Le Dali, Germany’s Burgermeister, and New Zealand’s Fergburger.

Enough burgers for now, Megan Steintrager is wondering where the best hot dogs are in the world. Send us your suggestions in the comments below.

The best hot dog in the world can be found at a little crepe stand near Notre Dame in Paris. You choose 2 or 3 hot dogs and they are grilled with emmental cheese and then placed on a fresh baguette. So delicious! I always take my visitors there!  http://www.palmbeachdailynews.com/news/lifestyles/food-cooking/postcards-from-paris-tasty-crepes-a-paris-street-f/nMGcy/

Hot Dogs? No question- Ted’s in Tempe, AZ. Charcoal grilled; moist and tender. Meats imported from Buffalo, NY…

There’s an awesome hot dog spot in Provo, UT, by the BYU campus (started by a student).  It’s called Jdawgs and they have delicious ‘dawgs’ with a simple yet perfect menu.  Make sure to get it with sauerkraut, their amazing Special Sauce, and a pickle spear.  Truly a great hot dog at a great hot dog joint.  And it’s a great deal!

No need to travel the world for the best hot dog.  It is found in my hometown, Toledo, Ohio, at Tony Packo’s.  It’s called the Hungarian hot dog, and it is actually a sausage dog with best meat sauce in the world.  However, if you are looking for the best traditional hot dog, just go across town to Rudy’s.  (Rudy’s also has the best fries.)  Don’t be fooled by fancy “gourmet” dogs with exotic toppings.  If they need all that stuff then there can’t be much to them.

Best burger in South American: Peklets in Jamundi, a little pueblo just south of Cali. This from a Chicago expat. Trust me on this. Get the fries too. (Oh, and a double burger, fries and a not-so-wonderful Colombian beer: $7

In Santiago we like Domino, but what it comes down to is that Chile is famous for hot dogs. Did anyone see the episode of Anthony Bourdain’s “No Reservations” in Chile? He checked out the hot dogs.

Hot dogs means Chicago and Vienna and David Berg and all of the Jewish “kosher” hot dogs…

so my list hits the high points:

SuperDawg ( the original owners knew my mom ! )

Hot Dougs…never been there but someday

Suzies..24×7 great and insane combinations of meats ( hot dog/hamburger/great beef/ok gyros/egg ) and card (bins, breads, pita, totilla )…plus outdoor dining and tatooed people out for the night snack…

and 24×7 diners, not hot dogs, but my other favorite food chilli mac.Jeri’s grill on Irving Park.

The best “hot dog” we’ve had in a long time was just last week at the “Balkan Grill Walter” in Salzburg, Austria.  Two hot dogs in a bun, with 5 different choices for condiments.  Out of this world curry spices!  It’s a tiny place down a secret passageway, and worth finding.

I lived in the US for 6 years and I was shocked to hear on PRI “The World” today that America has good burgers. But Aaron rarely steers me wrong so I’m guessing that there must be a good burger in America. Anyone traveling in Canada won’t go far wrong if you want a decent fast food burger by going to Harvey’s. If you want a great Hot Dog, hit the Silver Bullet on Notre Dame in Sudbury, Ontario. It’s only open during the summer though.

Pat’s Dairy Bar in Calais, Maine – a little spit of a town on the Canadian border, way down east (as we say up here).  Pat’s has been a staple of the border town for decades.  They slow cook their beef dogs in peanut oil, which gives it a distinct flavor.  Slice the dog down the middle to apply ketchup, mustard, onions, and such, put it in a bun, and you’ve got a classic on your hands.  I always make a point to get a couple hot dogs from Pat’s whenever I get home.

Love hot dogs! And the most amazing one I’ve tasted was in Sarasota at a place called Eat Here. They call it the Heart Attack Hot Dog :)) it’s bacon wrapped beef hot dog that is deep fried and served on a garlic buttered bun. [Oh may!] It’s served with fois gras, truffle butter and bearnaise. When it arrives, it also comes with a short form will. It’s uh-mazing!
