If the English county of Yorkshire were a nation in its own right, it’d be near the top end of the current Olympic medal table. Athletes from Yorkshire are responsible for much of Britain’s current success at London 2012.

In terms of gold medals, for now at least, Yorkshire is even besting the totals of big sporting nations such as Australia. That country’s dismal haul so far has led to debate over the scale and scope of elite sports development in the country.
