When US Ambassador Chris Stevens died last week in Libya, one detail about his life struck us. He was an ambassador who had served in the Peace Corps.

There are not many ambassadors who have. And that made a difference in the kind of ambassador Stevens was.

The World’s Marco Werman, who also served in the Peace Corps, tracked down Amie Bishop, one of the other volunteers Chris Stevens served with.

Excellent piece. I particularly appreciated the final statement Ms. Bishop made regarding cultural competence. Helping community college students achieve cultural and global competence is a significant aspect of my work and will be crucial to their futures, whether in public service or the private sector.

I was listening to this in my car and yelled and cheered at the statement that the State Dept NEEDS MORE FOREIGN SERVICE OFFICERS LIKE AMB STEVENS. As an American, I think Mr. Stevens should set the standard. I’m appalled at the idea of our diplomats hanging out in exclusive expat clubs instead of on the streets getting to know the people and cultures where they serve. Kudos to you Amb Stevens – may many more be inspired by you and follow in your footsteps.

A lovely piece on an exemplary diplomat – and human being.

I honor the memory and grieve at the loss of an exemplary man of the people who lived his philosophy daily, and not in sound bites for popular consumption or career promotion.
