You might remember Scottish singer Julie Fowlis from the soundtrack for this past summer’s animated blockbuster from Disney’s Pixar “Brave.”

Well, the Scottish Gaelic singer is taking part in the Ryder Cup.

She’s not teeing up on the green.

She’s performing in a Ryder tribute to Scotland’s central role in golf history.

Those performances will be entertainment at the Ryder Cup.

But they’re also a form of cultural politics.

There’s an ongoing debate in Scotland over whether or not to declare independence from Britain — or at least push for greater autonomy.

That movement away from mother Britain is known as devolution.

For Julie Fowlis though it’s less complex.

Representing Scotland at the Ryder Cup is about identity: telling the world that Scotland is Scottish.
