Well if Mr Hamid likes to quote the NYTimes he can also refer to this article published last June. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/06/21/world/middleeast/cia-said-to-aid-in-steering-arms-to-syrian-rebels.html?pagewanted=all It said CIA is "helping allies (ie Qatar and Saudi Arabia) decide which Syrian opposition fighters across the border will receive arms to fight the Syrian government" Now he advocates that the USA delivers heavier weapons to the rebels but with a NATO label, which looks more acceptable, than just a CIA operation. Whats the difference ? The risk here is much more than just a threat to US security because of arming jihadis cells by mistake, the risk concerns the whole region and first the neighbouring Turkey, Lebanon, Irak. But it will also have an impact on Europe relations with Russia, China and Iran. Also I dont think the US record is very good in the area in the last decades, just going one scale down from military intervention to delivering weapons, dont change the matter : people in the Middle East had enough of US intervention. USA paid the price for it today, and it will again tomorrow, but the most harmed will be the civilians ...again.

Shahid is clearly overlooking the wider impact of the US actively arming the rebels. The Russia/China/Iran effect is been overlooked. This conflict can quickly and dangerously escalate into a proxy war between the west and Russiochina/Iranian war. Lets not be too hasty to talk about winning like this situation is some sort of game. We saw what happened in Iraq for years after the so called Victory. It s time we started thinking of ways an means of creating an easing and potentially secession from conflict in Syria and the region. Let's not forget the potential of chemical weapons being used in this conflict.
