Dance Floor Politics in Tijuana with the Band Los Macuanos

The music Los Macuanos creates is known as ruidosón, which roughly translates as noise-folk, electronic music that mixes dance beats with sounds evoking Mexican culture. In Tijuana in 2009 that culture was pretty dark.

“At the time I didn’t think to make political music, or to make, like, socially relevant music, I was just like translating my experience to music and it turned out it sounded like Mexico, it sounded like Tijuana but with these dark undertones,” says band member Moises Lopez.

Electronica may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of political music. But Tijuana’s youth culture revolves around clubs where dance music fuels a late-night party scene. That was almost a drug war casualty too.

At the height of the crisis in 2008 and 2009, just going out at night was an act of defiance.

Now that the violence has faded in Tijuana, Moises Horta says, the dance floors are packed again. “You’re dancing to these political samples, very violent rhythms, you’re partying but you’re getting tripped out about the whole situation, you’re partying in the apocalypse. It’s dance floor politics.”

Reuben Torres says Los Macuanos are musicians, not activists. But they’re speaking up, and they hope Mexico is listening. “It’s just pop music. I don’t think we’re that much of a threat to the status quo or anything like that. But I just think there’s some part of you that says, maybe somebody’s going to change something about the way that they think.”

    “Suelo de Baile Politicos” parece como un nombre comico a mi.  Pero el subjeto de ese articulo no es una cosa comica.  Ademas, es muy inspirador porque Los Macuanos estan jovenes y estan haciendo un cambia.  Tijiana estaba un lugar muy peligroso a causa de los carteles de drugas y todo la violencia que ha pasado en alli.  Los jovenes en el lugar necesitan una manera para divertirlos en los tiempos despues de eso.  Los Macuanos estan haciendo que aman y proporcianando entretenimiento.  Tambien, la banda cantan sobre sus pensamientos en como pueden mejerar Mexico, que es una acta muy inpirador en estes tiempos.

    Interesting. For the most part music is always able to capture the emotion of the people. (Excluding the U.S.’s pop music.) This is a great way for people in the future to learn about their country’s history. Hopefully this area of the world will continue to get good press in the near future.

    Creo que esto es increíble! Me gusta tocar música, pues cuando ver otras personas hagan música es maravilloso. Estoy alegre que ellos usan música para llegar a la gente. Me gusta mucho la idea de “política pista de baile”, y tiene un nombre bueno. Espero que lo ayuda hacer cambiar en la gente, sin tener en cuenta de si músicos o activistas.

    I think that the music that Los Macuanos is making is great for Mexico. It’s mentioning politics for people who might not pay attention to any of it. It brings a message for the people of Mexico and Tijuana.

    I agree with Felipe. Music has always had and always will have the potential to be commentary on the state of the world at the time it is being written. History may look at this in a very educational way.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ru8W_AXUwIA Escucha.  Su música es muy interesante y tiene un ritmo diversión.  Me gusta que utilizan su música para el bien de Tijuana.  Yo creo que es interesante que ellos no se consideran mismos activistas.  Su música está afectando a otros pero no es mala en mi opinion.

    Este musica es como la musica durante los 60′s en los estados unidos.  La musica no cambia los politicos pero personas que escuchan a la musica piensan sobre los ideas.  Pienso que la musica politica de Mexico es grande.  Musica politica es una forma de protesta que todos las personas pueden entender y disfrutar.

    Ese cuenta es muy interesante, y también extraña.  La música para políticos es un táctico muy creativo.  ”Dance Floor Politics” no es una nueva idea, pero ahora están 
    adquirido más popularidad, y me gustalo.  Música da ayuda en los situaciones malos como los actividades ilegales, y quizás que usando música en políticos adquiriré más aproba con las artistas.
